DIRECTOR OF MARKETING AND COMMUNICATIONS

Position Summary

Acumen is seeking a highly-skilled, mission-driven communications and marketing professional to spearhead the organization’s global communications, marketing and public relations strategies, both internally and externally. S/he understands that marketing ultimately is about creating meaningful connection that drives action, and that a catalytic approach will accelerate the impact of our work by creating broader and deeper understanding of our values, progress and impact. As Director of Communications and Marketing, s/he will ensure that Acumen’s story is told effectively across all relevant audiences, and s/he will work across functions and geographies to distill insights for dissemination across online and offline channels.

Responsibilities

  • Increase visibility of Acumen’s mission and impact, create stronger connections to the brand and the values it represents.
  • Distill and communicate Acumen’s complex and powerful ideas to strengthen our positioning as a go-to source as a thought leader on the role of patient capital in fighting global poverty.
  • Oversee all global communications, including the development of messaging and content—from storytelling to print materials to video—for a variety of channels and a diversity of audiences, both global and regional.
  • Develop and ensure high-visibility media and PR plans are in alignment with business unit objectives and are consistent with organizational goals.
  • Ensure that Acumen’s key leaders are visible externally, and are securing industry accolades and speaking engagements.  Provide guidance, prep and support to the CEO and other senior leaders regarding strategic messaging, writing, editing and publishing.
  • Serve as the strategic lead, in concert with our Business Development and Strategic Partnerships functions, on the planning and execution of a variety of events that engage and reaffirm our community of donors and corporate partners.
  • Support communications needs across internal functions, working collaboratively to align these needs with both local demands and Acumen’s larger strategic communications and marketing agenda.
  • Engage internal and external stakeholders in ways that nurture relationships, collaborate effectively and foster a sense of community.
  • Lead of team of four direct reports in New York.

Ideal candidates for this role also have: 

  • 15+ years of work experience, ideally a blend of private sector, and social impact or non-profit. 
  • Big-picture, growth-minded, strategic thinker with exceptional analytical, written and verbal communication and presentation skills.
  • Significant experience in communications, external affairs, and/or marketing with progressive leadership responsibility and a track record of creating, delivering and measuring innovative communications strategies.
  • Proven success tailoring messages to a variety of audiences, particularly in translating complex subjects to a diverse range of stakeholders.
  • Extensive understanding of communications trends, best practices, digital platforms, analytics tools and collaboration technologies and how they can be utilized to enhance organizational goals.
  • Highly creative, comfortable with ambiguity, interested in big, thorny questions. 
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, high-performing culture and provide leadership and direction to the team when there are curve balls, all while juggling multiple priorities and competing viewpoints.
  • High capacity to collaborate across matrixed teams, as well as the ability to exert influence both with and without formal authority. Ability to influence and drive change in a collaborative manner.
  • Strong network of relationships with thought leaders in your space, and the capacity to effectively enlist and engage leading thinkers and doers to support our work. 
  • Eagerness to travel globally across the developing world (anticipated 10-20% travel). 
  • Permanent authorization to work in the United States. 

Compensation 

Acumen offers competitive compensation for the international development sector, commensurate with experience. Compensation includes a base salary, an annual bonus based on achievement of individual and organizational goals, health insurance, and an employer-sponsored contribution to a defined contribution retirement program.
